Over the last decade John Malcolm has restored about ten oil paintings for me and on each occasion with a splendid result. Quite apart from his obvious skill in the technical elements his discipline, Mr Malcolm has also a fine sense of the aesthetic qualities of a work essential for judging the scope and intensity of any restorative effort. He speaks, thus, of the importance of being able to “read” a picture, thereby integrating all physical elements of varnish, pigments and support, while recognising the various predations of time and distinguishing the original intent of the artist.
It is most reassuring the Mr Malcolm is most attentive in preserving delicate superficial glazes and avoids at all costs any harsh or overly robust cleaning techniques so often employed by others for the sake of a pristine cosmetic effect. He has behind him an impressive family tradition of art restoration and very much sees his work as his true vocation.
I can without hesitation recommend Mr Malcolm as a superbly competent, insightful and careful restorer who offers a friendly, prompt and candid service. He has been able to effect veritable small miracles of a ‘Lazarus effect’ in bringing back to light the original merits of the paintings he has restored for me in his studio.

I am writing to thank you for restoring the oil painting of Gentlemen on Canvas which was referred to you by Linda Blackstone Gallery in Pinner some time ago and which was in very poor condition having been rolled up and stored in an airing cupboard for many years.
The painting is thought to be Georgian and portrays an ancestor of my wife on her mother’s side, probably with the surname Tinsley and we think that it was painted in Liverpool in about 1780.
Bearing in mind the condition of the canvas when sent to you the quality of the restoration is excellent and my wife and I would like to thank you for your skill and painstaking craftsmanship in bringing Mr Tinsley back to life again.
With much appreciation and kindest regards
Yours sincerely,
Peter Glover
